Gregory P. Prastacos is Professor of
Management Science at the Department of Management Science and Technology
and Rector of
the Athens University of Economics and Business, Director of the
MBA International and Director of the Management Science Laboratory
(MSL). He
has been educated at Columbia University, where he received a B.S. in Computer
Science, an M.S. in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. in Operations Research. He
has previously taught at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania,
and the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University, and has held
visiting appointments at the University of Bern, the University of
Paris-Dauphine, the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis
(IIASA), and the National Center for Scientific Research in France (CNRS).
Professor Prastacos' research,
professional and teaching interests are in the areas of Management Science and
Information Technology, and their use for Business Transformation in the
Information Society. He has published 7 books and more than 50 papers in
academic journals and edited volumes. His work has appeared in journals such as Management
Science, Operations Research, J. Operational Research Society, European
Management Journal, Information & Management, Interfaces, Computers &
Operations Research, J. Decision Systems, RAIRO, and others. For his
work on perishable inventory management he has been awarded the 1979 Management
Science Achievement Award by the Institute for Operations Research &
Management (INFORMS). For his work on financial management modelling, he has
been awarded the 1st prize of the Hellenic OR Society.
His latest book
Management Science in Practice presents a portfolio of applications of
Management Science for the various areas in an enterprise (finance, marketing,
production, logistics & supply chain, human resources, etc). For each area,
a number of key problems are presented, modelled, solved using the appropriate
package, and the proposed strategy is discussed. At the beginning of the book
the reader is also presented with a number of "integrated" applications, most
of them having received the INFORMS practice world prize, and demonstrating
implementation issues. A CD accompanies the book, including a demo version of
the software used in the book (Expert Choice, @Risk, Precision Tree, MapInfo,
Extend). A web site has been developed to support the book.
Professor Prastacos has directed a
large number of major research projects for the European Commission, as well as
for other public or private organizations. His most recent projects include
MACIS, a Pan-European ESPRIT project on the impact of Information
Society on organisations, management, and management curriculum and
FORESIGHT, a project aiming to identify the scenaria of development of
Greece from a technology perspective. He is or has been on the editorial or
reviewing board of a number of academic journals and research organisations. He
is an elected Fellow of the Washington Academy of Sciences, and has been a
member of the Board of Directors of HELORS, a member of the Scientific Council
of the Greek National Economic Research Institute, an evaluator and auditor to
the European Commission (DG V, XII, XIII), a frequent speaker to conferences,
and an advisor to government organisations and private industry.
